This is a trip with friends to Mt. Rainier's summit in July 2002. We had nearly perfect conditions beginning with the year's hottest day.
Crevasses are all around as we wind our way around them. |
Though the route is in good shape and the way is clear, it is no 'walk in the park.' It is steep and the snow is hard. |
The snow slowly begins to lighten, but first is colored in shades of pink and orange by the rising sun. |
Summit day! Afte a few hours' climbing, the sun finally emerges from behind the horizon. |
A well deserved break after a couple hours of climbing. We've had a few technical difficulties, but so far, all is going well. |
Anothe storm cloud forms behind me, but fortunately did not come our way. |
New camps are made with only two short cloud bursts to mak things interesting. Larry looks up toward our objective for tomorrow. |
The next day, we need to move camp up a few hundred feet. Kirk and Chris enjoy some fellowship. |
Ok Chris, you pose well with the shovel!.. Now, how about using it to help out Larry and Carl?? |
Kirk gets his first taste of mountain dehydrated cuisine! |
In my tent, enjoying a hot cup of cider. |
Pink sunset upon Little Tahoma. |
A view of the campsite. Ours are the three tents and three bivy's in the center. |
Great photo of Carl and Larry with Rainier in the background. |
Tent up, dinner complete, I'm ready to enjoy the evening sunset. |
I think the experience for Larry is a bit overwhelming . . .! But he's doing great and tomorrow is a rest day. |
Camp is complete just as the sun slips behind the mountain. Jon, Jesse and Chris will be sleeping here in the bivy's. |
Chris finally get to relax at camp. |
Preparing platforms for tents and bivy bags. After this is done, a kitchen area is made and stoves fired up for hot drinks and dinner. |
Camp Schurman at the base of Steamboat Prow. This protected area is the second most popular base camp on the mountain. |
The summit is ahead to the left, a with Liberty Cap on the right. |
Moving down the ridge and onto the Emmons. The dark line at the bottom is a long crevasse which is too wide to cross and very deep. |
Roped up on glaciers is the only safe way to travel. On the Emmons Glacier which will take us to our first camp, |
The Summit, as seen from the Emmons Glacier. |
