After hiking from the trailhead for acouple hours and several miles, we reach a high point wher the vegetation thins out for our first view of the day. |
Mt. Baker dominates the skyline in the north. |
As we hike a ridgeline at the upper end of the alpine zone, views of Mt. Baker become our constant companion. |
Jesse pauses (poses?) for a shot with our route meandering up and to the right, through a cleft in the rocks. |
In this shot, you can see the trail in the upper right of the photo, that leads to the cleft. |
A sunny day, Jesse, me and Carl stop for a photo in the meadow along the trail, with Mt. Baker as a backdrop. |
At the upper end of the trail, we'll leave the alpine zone. |
This is at the junction of the National Forest and National Park. |
Following the trail as it winds upward and out of the alpine zone |
From the cleft at the top of the trail, and looking back into the Baker Lake valley. |
Once past the notch, the alpine zone falls behind us and we begin along a climber's path toward the glacier to locate the bivy sites. |
The sun melts the snow patches whaich still adhere to the polished rocks, creating many small creeks. |
Even amid the rocks, delicate flowers stretch to receive nourishment from the sun. |
Higher on the moraine, we follow the faint path leading closer to the glacier. |
The valley below opens to reveal an expansive panorama of numerous peaks to the south. |
Our first view of the objective - Mt. Shuksan - with a heavily crevassed lower section of the Sulphide Glacier. |
Carl takes a rest near our bivy location. |
Jesse with the southern mountain ranges behind him. |
A couple climbers traversing the lower section of the Sulphide Glacier. |
Carl on the glacier, with the summit behind him. It is deceivingly far away, as we will soon find out. |
Jesse pauses on the Sulphide Glacier, with the Shuksan summit in the background. |
Even the remotest of living spaces needs some decorating. Here we are provided with some natural color. |
Mt. Shuksan and the heavily crevassed lower Sulphide glacier. |
Ahhhhh! At last we get to rest and set up camp. Actually it was quite pleasant and relaxing, and a great hike in! |
My Megamid provides one shelter, while the lower bivys of Jesse and Carl are without tents. |
